Interlocks help people break the cycle of drink driving and build safer, long-term habits. Many of our clients have told us their interlock was the key to breaking old patterns and staying accountable. While an interlock is installed, it’s not possible to drink drive which keeps the driver safe, along with others on the road.
Unlike our Smart Start Interlock, the voluntary interlock is designed for simplicity and ease of use. There’s no need for complex technique—just a simple blow to get started. This makes the voluntary interlock a convenient and hassle-free option for those who want to maintain control while ensuring safety on the road. Especially if other people are using the vehicle, for example a work truck with several drivers.

Yes, you can install a voluntary alcohol interlock if you hold an alcohol interlock licence. Please note, a voluntary interlock will not count towards your court-ordered interlock sentence but it will mean that you can legally drive within your licence conditions. Voluntary interlocks are ideal for secondary or company vehicles with multiple drivers.
To get a voluntary alcohol interlock installed, simply call us on 0800 002 182. One of our team will set a file up with all the details and then let you know your next steps.

An alcohol interlock can be installed into any vehicle. It doesn’t have to be in your name. If the vehicle is not in your name, ensure you get the owners approval first.
If alcohol is present in a breath sample, the interlock will prevent the vehicle from starting for a period of time from 5-30 minutes. Once the timer has finished you will be able to attempt to start the vehicle again.
An alcohol interlock will prevent the vehicle from starting if alcohol is present in the initial breath sample. However, an alcohol interlock will never shut the engine off while driving.
Interlocks are very sensitive and they will detect alcohol regardless of where it comes from. You can read more about mouth contaminants here. If your interlock has temporarily locked out due to a contaminant reading, you will need to wait for the countdown to end and then take another test.
If you follow these instructions, you won’t have any issues with mouth contaminants: “If you’ve had anything to eat, drink, smoke, or chew, have a drink or water and wait at least two minutes before you blow into your interlock.”
Yes, the voluntary interlock stores data locally. This data is available when the device gets serviced every 6 months. The data can be retrieved more often at the drivers request.
While the data is stored on the interlock, it doesn’t have to be downloaded when the interlock is serviced (if you didn’t want any record of your interlock data).
No, an interlock will not cause any permanent damage to the vehicle. Once the interlock has been removed from the vehicle, the wiring will be installed to preinstallation condition.
A Smart Mobile is a remote alcohol monitoring solution. It calls for tests at set times. When the user takes the test, it will capture a photo of the user's face when the test is taken. It will then generate a report and send it automatically to anyone who is signed up to receive the reports.
