Smart Mobile is a remote alcohol monitoring device with a built-in camera and cellular modem.

Smart Mobile calls for tests and records breath alcohol data, the date and time, and a photo of the user’s face. The data is then uploaded via cellular and customised reports are emailed to the relevant stakeholders.
  • Customisable Test Windows
    Smart Mobile test windows are completely customisable. They can be adjusted to suit any remote alcohol monitoring situation. Users can take voluntary tests at any time, in addition to scheduled tests.
  • Ingested Alcohol Confirmation
    If a user blows an alcohol violation, the device will ask for two successive re-tests to confirm it was ingested alcohol and not a mouth contaminant, e.g. mouthwash.
  • Facial Detection
    Smart Mobile used facial detection and photo ID. A digital image of the user is captured and stored at every test.
    Photo records can be used to confirm identity in relation to tests and are included in reports for monitoring a user’s compliance. Having a photo of the user’s face puts their sobriety beyond doubt for remote alcohol monitoring.
  • Test Data Uploaded
    Successfully completed tests are uploaded to Smart Start’s database server via the device’s onboard cellular modem.

    If a cellular signal is not available, Smart Mobile stores the data until a communication link can be established.

Smart Mobile is a remote alcohol monitoring device. It uses advanced fuel cell technology to provide accurate, court-admissible results.When a test is taken, the device captures a photo of the user's face, and sends instant PDF reports via cellular connection to the required contacts.

The Smart Mobile is set up to call for tests at set times, however, the user can take a voluntary test at any time.

Smart Mobile can be used by anyone wanting to prove their sobriety. Additionally, it can act as a great accountability tool.
In instances where alcohol misuse is a concern (e.g. regarding child safety), Smart Mobile offers peace of mind to parents and caregivers.

Examples where Smart Mobile has been used:

  • Testing schedule (we recommend 5+ test per day)
  • Reports to be sent out (see question below)
  • Monitoring authorities (who should receive the reports)
  • Payment option (we offer monthly payments or prepayment of 3+ months)

The reports that can be sent are:

  • Instant report - sent out after every test
  • Daily report - sent out in the afternoon
  • Daily detail report - sent out after every test, no photo is included
  • Weekly report
  • Bi weekly report
  • Monthly summary
  • Violation report (skipped tests and alcohol readings)
  • BAC Violation (alcohol reading recorded)

Note that all reports contain the following information unless otherwise specified.

  • Test result (with an exact alcohol reading if alcohol is detected)
  • Time and date the test was taken
  • Photo of the users face

If multiple people are receiving the reports, they can be set up to receive different reports depending on their preferences.

The reports that people receive depend on the situation. For example in a custody dispute, there would be several parties receiving the reports. Lawyers, mother, father, and often lawyer for child.

Lawyers typically receive a violation report and a weekly or monthly report. Whereas the parents of the child would generally receive a report after every test and a daily or weekly summary.

Every situation is different, so if you are unsure of which reports you should be receiving, we are more than happy to provide recommendations.

To update your testing times, simply email info@smartstartinterlocks.co.nz. Include the name associated with the account in the email and the times you are needing changed.

Please note we cannot change the testing schedule for one off changes but you can take a voluntary test at any time if something out of the ordinary is required.

First, ensure your Smart Mobile device has four bars of reception. If it does, try taking a voluntary test to prompt a data upload.

Smart Mobile is $299 per month, all inclusive. There are no hidden fees or extra charges. The monthly lease covers full access to the device, ongoing support, all associated data and product warranty.

When the Smart Mobile calls for a test, simply blow into the mouthpiece whilst looking at the camera. Avoid bright light in the background when taking the test to ensure the camera will detect a face.

If you or someone you know is needing to prove that they are not drinking alcohol, Smart Mobile is the perfect solution. Simply blow into it, and you’ll receive a record of tests taken along with your picture of your face. The data is accurate and can be used in court.

With Smart Mobile, you can easily monitor a friend or family member’s sobriety. By setting up regular tests, you can receive instant reports showing the results. This ensures that you have accurate, real-time data to confirm their sobriety at any time.

Yes, the data from Smart Mobile is court-admissible. It meets the AS 3547:2019 standard for electronic breathalysers, ensuring its accuracy and reliability.

If you are travelling overseas with your Smart Mobile, it will update automatically to the correct time zone. Smart Mobile works in all countries with the exception of the United States of America.


If the time doesn't automatically update, the Smart Mobile can still be used but all test results will be reported in the time zone it was showing at the time the tests were taken.

If someone chooses not to blow into the Smart Mobile, a notification will be sent to everyone that is signed up to receive the reports. When a notification of a skipped test is received, the parties can take appropriate action.

While it’s technically possible for someone other than the intended user to blow into the device, this would be immediately obvious from the photo taken during each test, which is included in the report. See the image below for an example of how the device captures the user’s face.

The Smart Mobile also requires a continuous 3 second blow, ensuring it captures a deep lung sample. This makes it extremely difficult to fake or manipulate the test.
